    First School for the Deaf
    Thomas Gallaudet founded a school for the Deaf in the United States. Thi​s is a significant milestone in the education system because it changes the way people associate education and disabilities. Previously, a disability was associated with the child not being able to get an education at all.
  • Beattie V. Board of Education

    Beattie V. Board of Education
    The case upholds that students can be exclu​ded from school based on a disability. This particular case the student had a physical disability that caused him to drool. The court ruled the students should not be kept in the general classroom despite not having any intellectual disability.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    Brown V. Board of education is the supreme court case that ban segregation in public schools. This case marked that separate but equal was not, in fact, equal and hold​s no place in the education of a child.
  • FAPE

    FAPE
    The free appropriate public education is the right for all students to receive an education at no cost including students with disabilities. Students with disabilities have access to different services to support their educati​on at no charge. Through FAPE all students have access to the general curriculum and meet the grade level standards mandated by the state.
  • Rehabilitation Act

    Rehabilitation Act
    This act prohibits discrimination on the basis of disabilities in all programs conducted by federal agencies or receiving federal financial assistance. This act gives the opportunity for students with disability to have a chance of employment as they complete their school education and vocational programs.
  • P.L 93-380

    P.L 93-380
    P.L 93-380 provides funding to programs for students with special needs. This law also provides instructions for due process procedure, and address the concept of least restrictive environment for a disabled student. This law also ensures the needs of gifted students are met as well.​
  • Education for all Handicapped Act

    Education for all Handicapped Act
    The education for all handicapped children act provided further funding for schools to develop programs to support special needs students. Each state had to submit a plan of how they were going to use the funding to support the needs of the students with disabilities.

    IDEA
    The individual with disabilities education act ensures that disabled students are receiving a free appropriate education.IDEA includes zero rejects, procedural safeguard, confidentiality, Parental involvement, and least restrictive environment. Through IDEA student with a disability can have an individual education plan that ensures the student will be receiving an appropriate education.

    ADA
    The American with Disability Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination in employment, public services, and public accommodations. The ADA ensures students with physical disabilities have​ access to the different facilities in their school through building codes.
  • No Child Left Behind

    No Child Left Behind
    The no child left behind act aims to close achievement gaps and ensure all students have highly qualified teachers. It does this by having the students take standardized testing, holding teachers and the school accountable for the student's​ education.
