John Gotti

John Gotti was a crime boss. In the late 60s he was put in jail for truck hijacking and theft. He bribed prison officials to be released and went back to his house in Queens. Gotti was seen as a “celebrity criminal”. He was very publicized and acted above the law. His trials in the 90s were pretty significant. Important date to remember: April 2nd, 1992 was the date Gotti was convicted.

LA Riots

The LA riots were caused by an outrage after a policeman had assaulted an African American by the name of Rodney King. Looting, Riots, and protests followed causing destruction and many deaths in LA. A total of 50 people were killed and over $1 billion in damage had been done. Important date to remember: April 22nd, 1992 was the day the riots took place.

Kurt Cobain

Kurt Cobain was a member of the band “Nirvana”. After his parents divorce he went into a rage and got into drugs. Cobain and his band found success after a couple of years. You may recognize song like smells like teen spirit. His success did not last long as Cobain would die from a heroin overdose. Important date to remember: April 5th, 1994 which is the day Kurt passed.

Hip Hop in the 90s.

Hip Hip in the 90s was considered the golden age of hip hop. With artists such as Dr Dre, Jay-Z , Notorious BIG, Tupac Shakur, and Eminem. They created a culture this still lasts to this day. A couple of the artists were shot and killed during the 90s. Important date to remember: September 13th, 1996 the day Tupac Shakur was shot.

Harry Potter

Harry Potter: Harry Potter is a series of 7 books that were released during the 90s. The books were written by J.K. Rowling. The first book was released in 1997. Since then there have been over 500 million books sold. This series is about a Wizard named Harry. Important date June 26th, 1997 the day the first book was released.

Jesse Jackson

Jesse Jackson was a Civil Rights Activist, he worked with Dr. King and ran for president. He traveled the world to speak out on various issues. He was named by President Clinton a special envoy to Africa. There he would speak on human rights issues. Important date to remember; October 1997 the month Jackson was appointed the special envoy of Africa.

Lauryn Hill

Lauryn Hill is a singer that was big in the 90s. Hill is known not only for her musical ability but her leadership in helping others. She married Bob Marley’s son. She helped underprivileged youth for a good amount of time. Important date to remember: August 25th, 1998 was the day she released her album Miseducation.

Howard Stern

Howard Stern is a radio host, who is highly controversial and often got into trouble with the FCC. He published two books, was a producer on the show “Son of the Beach”, and a host on America’s Got Talent. Important date: April 1st, 2004 the day the FCC fined Stern after many complaints and warning for the previous 23 years.
