    Columbus
    An Italian explorer sailing for Spain who believed that Asia (India) could be reached by sailing west from Europe. His first voyage was in 1492, wherein he discovered North America (Caribbean islands) and named it the West Indies. He will make four voyages to the new world without fully realizing what he had discovered.

    the middle passage from 1518 to mid 19th century was Africans forced voyage from Africa across the Atlantic to the New world. part of the triangular trade route. they were taken across on boats that had up to 600 people. the Africans were brought to the New World to become slaves.
  • jamestown

    jamestown
    Jamestown 1607 was the first successful English settlement in North America. Located near Williamsburg, Virginia. three ships the Susan Constant, the God speed, and the Discovery transported 105 colonists to the new lands.
  • plymouth

    plymouth
    100 people today known as pilgrims set out for the "New World" on the mayflower in 1620. the group did this because they were known as pilgrims and wanted religious freedom. after 3 months at sea the group landed in present day Massachusetts.
  • New England Colonies

    New England colonies were formed mostly by English Separatists from 1620-1665. These purists ended up in the Plymouth colony all the way to the Massachusetts bay colony. Connecticut, Rhode island and new Hampshire were part of the New England colonies.

    In 1620 one of the first English settlements in Massachusetts (present day) was called Massachusetts Bay Colony. settled by roughly 1000 Puritans from England who wanted religious freedom. this was allowed by a grant from king Charles the first.

    the land between Virginia and New England was given by King Charles II in 1664. land was occupied by Dutch so they named it New York. the King then granted 45000 acres which is known as Pennsylvania.
  • Southern Colonies

    Southern Colonies
    in the 1680's southern colonies were a Ag based area growing corn cotton lumber and rice in the 1690's. the area became reliant on slaves. this was because they had close ties to the "English Planter Colony on Barbados.
  • Great Awakening

    Great Awakening
    between the 1720's and 1740's British American colonies had a religious revival. the revival was started to get the region back to God. George Whitefield and Jonathan Edwards were the leaders.
  • French and Indian War

    the French and Indian war from 1756- 1763 was also known as the seven year war. war started because the french pushed into the Ohio river valley even though British had claimed it. British won the war and it started westward expansion.

    in 1665 Great Britain issued a tax on all paper goods this tax was called the Stamp Act. the Stamp Act was put in place to help Great Britain recover from the French and Indian War and the Pontiac war

    on March 5th 1770 there was a standoff between a crowd of colonists and 8 British soldiers. the colonists were upset over the acts that were passed that taxed their goods. the soldiers felt threatened and shot 5 colonists.

    the tea act was passed basically British taxed tea. colonists got upset and On December 16, 1773 a group of colonists stormed the ships and dumped 342 chests of tea into the harbor.

    on April 19, 1775 the first battle of the Revolutionary War. 700 British men versus 400 American men. Most of Americans weapons and supplies were hidden or destroyed before the British made it to Concord. British lost 273 men Americans lost 93.

    Fought between 1775 and 1783. 13 Colonies break away fro Great Britain they created the Sovereign United States of America. started over Great Britain trying to regain control of the colonies. America won the war and gained independence

    a military camps for the continental Army from December 1977- June 1978. George Washington General of the group. Valley Forge was strategically located on trade routes and close to farm supplies. Washington stayed the winter with the men. A smallpox outbreak occurred over the winter

    The Abolition movement from 1783- 1888 started by rational thinkers who criticized that slavery took away the rights of a man. the abolitionists got the slave trade to end. Abolitionists got slavery to end in America by getting slavery to become illegal.

    Convention In Philadelphia at the Pennsylvania State House that drew up the Constitution on May 25th- September 17, 1787. 55 men took part of the drafting only 39 signed the Constitution.

    Starting in the 1790's The industrial Revolution. Samuel Slater started the Revolution with his Industrial Mill. Slater's machinery increased the speed of turning cotton into yarn. This was revolutionary for America at the time hence the Industrial Revolution.

    Thomas Jefferson had just purchased The Louisiana territory and wanted it explored. He also wanted to know if you could take the Mississippi river all the way across America He sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. this expedition took two years.

    The cause of the War of 1812 is the 2 wars fought between France and Britain. Americas interests conflicted with France and Britain's plans to block the other from trading with America. Britain was also getting Native Americans to attack Americans. Congress declared war in 1812.

    In 1820 Missouri was admitted into a state. It began the conflict over extension of slavery. It also led to the Civil War. Missouri first applied to become a state on 1817. Missouri ended up becoming a slave state.

    The Election of 1824 between John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. Jackson won The most popular and electoral votes but didn't win the majority. Adams was elected by The House of Representatives and became the 6th President of the United States of America

    on May 28th, 1830 The Indian Removal Act was passed. this allowed the president to move Indians west to unsettled prairies. This gave the states more desirable land.

    The Alamo a Franciscan mission located near San Antonio. A Mexican army of thousands of men surrounded a group of Texas volunteers. On February 23, 1836 General Antonio Lopez stormed the fort The 200 Texans held them off for 13 days.

    Gold was found at Sutters Mill in 1848 led to a increase in fortune seekers. In 1841 John Sutter was having a saw mill built near the river. News broke out and it led to 300,000 people moving to California to find gold.

    The compromise of 1850 California wanted to be a antislavery state and there was complications of whether new territories would be free or slave. So Henry clay came up with the compromise where California would be a free state and slavery in new territories was to be decided by the people in the new territories

    A Network of Northerners that helped escaped slaves get to freedom. This took place in the early to id 19th century. Harriet Tubman was a slave who had escaped and went back many times to help other slaves escape. during the underground railroad between 40,000 and 100,000 slaves reached freedom.

    Harriett Beecher Stowe Wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin in 1851. It was an Abolitionist novel. The book shows the reader the experience of what slavery was like.

    A mini Civil War in Kansas in 1854 where antislavery people from the North poured in to Kansas to vote anti slavery. And people from Missouri poured in to vote pro slavery. This was the first deaths over the fight for or against slavery.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott was a Army Physicians slave. The two went to free states to help out at postings. The two returned to Missouri , and in 1846 Dred Scott and his wife sued for their freedom in St. Louis court. The argument was their residence in a free territory made them free from slavery. the case made it to the U.S. supreme court where they ruled he was not a free man and not a U.S Citizen.
  • Lincoln Douglas Debates

    Lincoln Douglas Debates
    In the 1858 Illinois senator campaign A republican Abraham Lincoln and a democrat Stephen A. Douglas had 7 debates over the course of the election. The debates focused mainly on slavery and the continuation of slavery in western states. Douglas won the election but Lincoln gained popularity for his antislavery position.
  • Fort Sumter

    South Carolina seceded from the union. 5 days later 68 Union soldiers retreated to Fort Sumter. 4 moths went by and the first engagement of the civil war started. The only casualty of the battle was a horse.

    1860-1865 the Confederate States of America was the government for 11 southern states. between 1860 and 1861 11 states seceded from the Union. the main cause of the 11 states breaking away was slavery. the southern states were pro slavery and when Abraham Lincoln was elected that pushed them to secession.

    Before the Civil War 1861-1865 Americans believed it was their destiny to settle the West. Land acquired in Manifest Destiny was Oregon Country, New Mexico, California, And Texas.

    The North versus the South, the Union versus the Confederation. In 1861-1865 (4 year war) The Civil War was fought over slavery. roughly 752,000- 851,000 Americans died during the 4 year war. The Union won the war and the 11 states that seceded returned back to America

    On January 1, 1863 Lincoln gave a speech that freed all slaves from the Confederate states of America. The speech was given 4 months after the battle of antietam. Lincolns goal with the Emancipation was to stop slavery from spreading west to territories who would become part of the Union.

    The battle of Gettysburg was fought between July 1-3, 1863. in Gettysburg Pennsylvania. The Union Won the battle and it turned the tide of the war leading to a Union victory in the Civil War. there was 3,100 Union casualties and 3,900 Confederate casualties.

    On November 19, 1863 President Abraham Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address at the cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The main speech was 13,000 words and took 2 hours this speech was given by Edward Everett. Lincoln's speech was 271 words. Lincoln's speech was also widely quoted and was known as a masterpiece.
