During the civil war Abe Lincoln was elected for president. Also many battles took place during the war such as antietom, Gettysburg, and the Petersburg war. -

Well able Lincoln became president he wanted to put a stop to slavery. He issued his periliminary in which he declared all slaves in states in rebellion against the union "shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free. But many Americans disagreed with him. -

In the late 19 century a wave of immigration began, these immigrants settled in cities where ethnic neighborhoods began to grow. While this was happening Americans feared this immigration and didn't think these immigrants would adapt to the American society. New technology emerged and more jobs wer being offered pulling people into cities to work. This bring the guilded age.
