    -Texas was paid off 10 million to back its claims
    -Washington D.C. was required to end its slave trade, but slavery still kept going because it was legal
    -California became a free state
    -A law was made that forced people to catch runaway slave known as the "Stricter Fugitive slave act"

    -All slaves must be returned to their masters
    -No one can assist a slave otherwise they will be put in prison for 6 months

    -Harriet Beecher Stowe’s book sold 300,000 books in the first year and more than 2 million copies within five years
    -The 2nd highest selling book of the 19th century was about a slave owner that treated his slave bad and it changed a lot of people's views on slavery

    -This act allowed a state to decide weather to be a slave state or not
    -Kansas becoming a slave would ruin the missouri compromise
  • Dred Scott Decision

    -The supreme court declared that Dred Scott could not sue because he was property
    -The ruling declared that the missouri compromise was illegal because it was unconstitutional not allowing slavery in the Northern states
  • Harper's Ferry

    -John Brown leads a group of men in to take weapons from the Harpers Ferry
    -Their goal was to get the weapons and lead a slave revolt
    - The raid fails and John is hung for treason
    -The south sees what the north will do to end slavery

    -Abraham Lincoln was the only person against slavery.
    -He won, but the election showed how divided the country was considering no one voted for him
    -Lincoln being elected pushed the nation to the brink of war.

    -Fort Sumter was a federal fort in South Carolina
    -The South shot at Fort Sumter as the Union was trying to resupply it
    -The fort surrendered because of the attack
