    The United States purchased Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million. The treaty was signed by President Andrew Johnson and Alaska became the 49th State in America. The sale was initially delayed due to the Civil War.

    This was a 1,912 mile long continuous railroad. This was the first railroad to connect the east and western parts of the country via railroad. It took about 6 years to connect the already existing railroads to make the transcontinental.

    The Spanish- American War caused an arousal of nationalism. Hawaii's queen was overthrown and they were left without a leader. President Benjamin Harrison submitted a treaty to annex Hawaii. Hawaii was annexed and became the 50th state of the US.

    The 25th President of the United States, William McKinley, was shot twice in the abdomen in New York. He died a few days later of subsequent infection. Theodore Roosevelt took office and became the 26th President of the United States.

    President Theodore Roosevelt read Upton Sinclair's book "The Jungle" and didn't think all of these gross things were happening with his food. With investigation, the president found the book to be accurate and he needed to do something about it. This led to the creation of the Pure Food and Drug act of 1906.

    Franz Ferdinand was the heir to the Austria- Hungary throne. He and his wife were shot and killed by Gavrilo Princip. This is what sparked the beginning of world war 1.

President Woodrow Wilson tried to keep the US out of the war because he did not believe they should get involved with other countries affairs. The US became allies with Britain and France and declared war after the sinking of the USS Maine.
