Alaska is purchased from Russian for $7.2 million. They were interested in this piece of land because of its abundance in natural resources at the time and it was lightly inhabited. Alaska was originally going to be purchased earlier on but the Civil War delayed the sale.

The Gold Rush of 1849 made the need for a railroad that connected east railroads with other railroads throughout the country apparent. The railroad was hard to come by because of the terrain through which they wanted to build this railroad, however Theodore Judah discovered a way. Judah built the Central Pacific Railroad and went to Washington for financing.

Bell actually invented many other useful things, but he is mainly known for his invention of the telephone which he became inspired by because of interest in the science of sound. His interest in the science of sound was because of the inspiration that came from his deaf mother. Other scientists were however also interested in the idea of a telephone but Bell happened to get his patent on his telephone before anyone else. The Bell Telephone Company was then formed in 1877.

The Plessy v. Ferguson act was an argument in court over the Separate Car Act. This act stated that separate railway cars were required for blacks and for whites.They told Plessy to sit in a whites only car, so he did and then he was asked to leave and didnt. Because of his refusal he was arrested. He then went through court where they didnt agree with him and his argument that this act violated the 13th and 14th amendment. He was then convicted.

The sinking of the battleship the Main caused the US to reach its breaking point and declare war on Spain. The war ended caused the US and Spain to sign the Treaty of Paris. As a result of this signing of this treaty Spain lost its control of oversea land.

On September 6, 1901, president Mckinley was shot and taken to the hospital where he awaited his death after emergency surgery he passed away on September 14. Because the assassination Theodore Roosevelt then became president a couple days later.

The 19th Amendment guarantees women the right to vote. In the 19th century women suffrage supporters lectured, wrote, marched, and practiced civil disobedience to get a change for women. Women picketed, petitioned, and finally won.
