  • Lisbon Earthquake

    Lisbon Earthquake
    This 9 magnitude earthquake cause a tsunami that killed over 20,000 people. The earthquake alone cause damages to over 12,00 housing and public buildings. The earthquake then produce a 65 foot high tsunami. The tsunami traveled for 3,790 miles and stuck a few hours after it formed.
  • Krakatoa Earthquake

    Krakatoa Earthquake
    On August 26, the volcano Krakatoa erupted. It then caused a tsunami in around 30 meters tall. It then hit the coastal villages Java and Sumatra which effected over 165 villages, and killed over 36,000 people.
  • Aleutian Earthquake

    Aleutian Earthquake
    An earthquake from Hawaii with an 8.1 magnitude. It occurred in the Aleutian Trench. Around 45 minutes after the earthquake, a 100 feet tall tsunami hit the coast of Alaska. The tsunami also hit Hawaii at around 36 feet tall. Over 160 people were killed by the tsunami.
  • Great Chilean Earthquake

    Great Chilean Earthquake
    The magnitude was 9.5 from an earthquake in Chile. It stretched over 560 miles. The tsunami traveled for 15 ours and hit in Hawaii, it killed 1,655 people. The tsunami rose over 85 feet tall. Around 3,000 people were injured and tens of thousands left homeless.
  • Good Friday Earthquake

    Good Friday Earthquake
    A 9.2 magnitude earthquake in Alaska created a tsunami that killed 130 people in Alaska and California. The earthquake occurred 15 miles below Prince William Sound, near Anchorage, Alaska. Alaska's coastal towns were hit with numerous tsunamis and Anchorage was hit with landslides. The Alaskan cities had about 115 deaths. As for California, they were hit by multiple smaller tsunamis which killed about 16 people.
  • Hokkaido Earthquake

    Hokkaido Earthquake
    A 7.8 magnitude earthquake occurred off the shore of Japan. It created a tsunami that killed 120 people on Okushiri Island. This was considered to be one of the largest tsunamis in Japan's history. The tsunami was over 30 meters high and hit Japan within 3 minutes after forming, which is why it was so deadly. After the tsunami, there was an additional 65 deaths caused by the flooding. The tsunami caused over 600 million dollars worth of damages to the coastal islands effected.
  • Papua New Guinea Earthquake

    Papua New Guinea Earthquake
    An earthquake with a 7.1 magnitude occurred in the Pacific Ocean. This earthquake caused a submarine landslide. The landslide then caused a tsunami that hit Papua New Guinea and killed 2,100 people. The tsunami killed about 1,600 people, injured 1,000 and left over 10,000 people displaced. It was over 49 feet tall and had stretched over the 15 mile shoreline.
  • Samoa Island Earthquake

    Samoa Island Earthquake
    In the Samoan Islands, there was an earthquake with an 8.1 magnitude. The earthquake happened about 190km southwest of American Samoa. It created a tsunami that hit Samoa and killed 200 people. The tsunami had reached over 15 meters high. Dozens of villages were destroyed by the waters, especially along the shore line.
  • Chile Earthquake

    Chile Earthquake
    A 8.8 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of south-central Chile. The focus of the earthquake happened about 22 miles below the Pacific Ocean. This earthquake made a tsunami that hit Chile's coastal towns and killed 700 people. There were waves over 50 feet tall that struck the towns, and traveling at nearly 450 miles per hour.
  • Tohoku Earthquake

    Tohoku Earthquake
    An earthquake with a 9.1 magnitude occurred in Japan.It was 15 miles below the ocean and lasted about 6 minutes. The earthquake made a tsunami that killed over 20,000 people. The number of confirmed deaths was 15,894 but there are more than 2,500 people still missing. One of the highest waves of the tsunami was over 128 feet tall, and flooded over 217 square miles of Japan's coastal line.
