At the wedding of King Pelius and Thetis, Eris, the Goddess of Discord (who was not invited) threw a golden apple that was also known as the apple of discord and meant for "the fairest one" at three goddesses Athena, Aphrodite, and Hera. The three goddesses fought over the apple and asked Zeus to decided but he didn't want to so he let Paris, a trojan mortal choose.

Judgement of Paris This event was said to have caused the entire war. Each Goddesss tried to use whatever their "skill/power" was to bribe Paris into giving them the apple but Aphrodite who offered him the most beautiful women in the world, Helen was chosen.

Paris went to Sparta for a "diplomatic mission" but in reality he was just going to steal Helen while King Menelaus was away at his uncle's funeral. It is said that right before Paris entered the palace that Helen was shot with cupid's bow so she would fall in love with Paris just like Aphrodite promised. Helen fell in love with Paris when she first saw him. Paris got Helen to leave Sparta with him and go back to Troy.
