The Pope issued a decree in May 1493. Creating an imaginary north-south line separating the claims of Spain and Portugal. This way they each had there own part of the land.

Later in May 1493 Spain was given rights to go on the west of the line. Portuguese was told to stay on the east of the line. They obeyed these rules very well.

Portugal found out in 1494 that they got a bad deal. They had requested that Spain move the line. Spain moved the line 270 leagues further west.

Columbus made three additional voyages between 1494 and 1502. Exploring the Virgin Islands, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Trinidad. These became very important later.

Altogether it has been estimated that between 1500 and 1650 some 181 tons of gold and 16,000 tons of silver arrived in Europe. Thats a lot. Espesialy from the Spanish Colonies.

Later in the 1500’s Portugal established claim to a vast region of South America. This was of course only fair. It was there side of the region.

Portuguese explorer Pedro Alvares Cabral in 1500 east of the line established by the treaty led to the discovery of Brazil. Inland exploration westward from the Brazilian coast penetrated well beyond the line, but there was no wronging from Spain. As a result, Portugal established claim to a lot of the region of South America.

In 1502 Columbus figured out that his findings were not infact east. This caused many things to happen later. it would have been better if we known this sooner.

As the following 16th century revealed that this deal economically favored spain. Why? Well it was just the way that the land was.
