Henry Clay has made an attempt to balance the N. & the S. by drawing a line parallel to the 36'30 line. Anything below this line is a Slave State anything above is Free. You can start to see the seperation of the N. & the S. their different opinions on thing will cause them to drift apart -
Tariff pf Abominations
This event led South Carolina want to secede, the South Carolina Exposition was made by John C. Calhoun. Andrew Jackson stopped South Carolina from seceding. Already the states are wanting to secede from these differences between the North and the South. -
Annexation of Texas
Texas will be a slave state and this will upset the balance between the North and the South in the Senate.
The states are worried for new states to come in the Union because of without balance it will become unfair and people will get angry, -
Compromise of 1850
Henry Clay once again makes a compromise, slavery becomes outlawed. California is added to the Union as a free state and the Fugitive Slave Act is passed which angers the southerners causeing more tension between the North and the South. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Uncle Tom's Cabin by Hariett Beecher sold over 300,000 copies. This message will show thousands of people that slavery is wrong and cruel, because of this book theres more Northerners that become Anti-Slavery. -
The Kansas & Nebraska Act
Stepehen Douglas gave the states the right to choose to be either a free state or a slave state, no more Missouri Compromise which somewhat kept a balance. The North was enrange causing even more tension between both North and the South. -
Preston Brooks and Charles Sumner
Sumner made an abolitionist speech, Brooks was offended by Sumner's speech and on the Senate floor beat him into a coma with his cane.The beating helped to escalate tensions between north and south. Sumner became a hero to the North & Brooks became a hero as well to the South. -
Dred Scott Decision
Ruling by the Supreme Court stating that slaves are only property and do not have their own basic rights. This was a victory to the South because that helps them spread out to the North also.
The North is enraged. -
John Brown's Raid
John Brown planned to capture weapons in the US arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia and with those weapons he wanted to kill slave owners. He was later caught and hanged with his gourp of people. The Northerners saluted him as he was hanged, Southerners were angry for what he had done. -
Lincoln's Election
After Lincoln was elected as President in 1860 seven southern states already seceded starting with South Carolina once again. Lincoln hasn't done anything as PResident but the South already knew he was against slavery. This is the last straw for the South, this is the beginning of the Civil War
