The Wilmont Proviso was designed to eliminate slavery within the land acquired as a result of the Mexican War. President James K. Polk asked congress to appropriate $2 million for purchasing peace with Mexico. The bill passed the House but failed in the Senate.

Fearing his views on slavery, South Carolina will secede from the Union. Thereafter, 10 other states will follow. This leads to the Confederate States of America that will fight in the Civil War.
