Compromises and Events leading to Civil War (1810-1860)
The issue of slavery was constantly lingering above the heads of all Americans within the timespan of 1810-1860. Compromise after compromise were passes but everyone crumbled to the ground leading to the civil war. -
Tallmage amendment
This amendment was proposed by a northern state, new york and this stated that Missouri could be addmitted to the Union only as a free state, this enraged southerners because of the one sided desciion, therefor sparking war years later. -
The questions about Missouri
While confronting the issue of slavery, there was also the issue of slave and free states. Missouri was joining the Union imbetween the slave and free ohio boundary. The missouri compromise of 1820 made Maine a free state and Missouri a slave state. at the same time, congress drew an imaginary k=line to show where slavery could and couldnt be. -
The Gag Rule on Slavery
Again trying to dodge the issue of slavery, the US proposed a sort of Gag rule so that talk about anti slavery and pro slavery was forbidden. -
Wilmot Proviso
In 1846 a bill was proposed on the antislavery issue and it stated that neither slavery nor involuntary servitude shall ever exist. -
Compromise of 1850
Henry clay, now a senaator from kentucky, decided to end the deadlock between california. California, a state being addmited as a state was under arguement because of its location. The ompromise of 1850 stated that california be admitted as a free state and the new mexico and utah territories to decide whether they could be slave or free. -
The kansas Nebraska act
The kansas nebraska act covered the pursit of two new terriotories. Nebraska and Kansas. Both of these states were within questionable areas on the map of the United states.
This act allowed these two territories to join the Union as there prefered side. Slave or Free. -
The Dred Scott Descision
The Dredd Scott Descision All started with the trial of a man named dredd scott. Dredd was an African american slave man who was free in Northern states. Later in his life he was caught, and brought back to the south. There he was tried because of his freedom prior to this trial. In the end it all came down to a descision that would lead to more slavery controversies that would spark war. -
Election of 1860
Next to political parties durig this electio, the country had split into two factions imbetween north and south. The republicans and northerners were united behind lincolin but every other american was against our 16th president. The moment he was elected the war was confirmed and about a month later...the south seceded from the Union. -
Attack on Fort Sumpter
After the South seceded from the Union, all war broke out. The very first attack on the north was by a southern fleet on Fort Sumpter. All throughout the night, the Fort was shelled until the sun came and the stars and stripes were still standing.
