    Captain Cook found the east coast of Australia and called it New South Wales.

    The First Penal Colony in Australia
    The British Covernment brought convicts to Australia build a new country. The British Government set up six penal colonies that could run themselves and make their own laws but they were still ruled by Britain.

    It was found out thet New South Wales and New Holland were part of the same continent.

    Sir Henry Parkes made a speech at Tenterfield where he called for all the colonies to form a fedral Government.

    Politicians from all six colonies and New Zealand came together in Melbourne for a conference on Henry Parkes' speech the year before. They agreed that it was best to make an early union under the crown. They all decided to convince their colonial governments to send delegates to a convention for a fedral constitution.

    46 delegate from all colonies and New Zealand came together at a convention in Sydney to consider a draft constitution for federation. The colonial governments agreed but they failed to act to confirm it.

    At the conference John Quick proposed that the Colonial Parliaments need to decide on a draft constitution for a ferdal government and hold a referendum for the people of Australia to vote on the draft constitution.

    Delegates from all colonies except Queensland were picked by public vote. The delegates then went to Adelaide and Sydney to try to get a draft constitution for Federation.
    Finally in Melbourne they came up with a draft constitution that could be put to the colonies.

    In all colonies there were four referendums held to vote on the draft constitution for Federation. All colonies approved of the fedral constitution in all four votes. There had to be another referendum a while later because the constitution had been changed slightly. This vote was also approved by all six colonies and the idea was put forward to the Brtish Government.

    The draft constitution had been sent to London. Members of the British Parliament and Queen Victoria agreed to approve and sign the Australian Constitution Bill. This gave permision for Australia to become a Nation and the Constitution to become law.

    In Sydney the Fedral Constitution became a law and Australia became a Nation. This is one of the greatest moments in the history of Australia. The New Nation needed it's own name so it was called The Commonwealth of Australia.

    On the 3rd of Semptember Australia's new flag was flown for the first time and the same flag is flown today. The flag design was chosen in a competition to decide on the new nations flag. The winner of the competition was artist from Perth called Annie Dorrington.
