    John D. Rockefeller was the Head of Standard Oil Co. and one of the world's richest men. Rockefeller built his first oil refinery near Cleveland and in 1870, incorporated the Standard Oil Company. Around 1882, he had a near-monopoly of the oil business in the U.S.

    The United States reached an agreement to purchase Alaska from Russia for the price of $7.2 million. A Treaty with Russia was negotiated and signed by the Secretary of State, William Seward and Russian Minister, Edouard de Stoeckl. Some critics of this deal called the purchase, "Seward's Folly" or "Seward's Icebox"
