Timeline of the Khmer Empire

  • Period: Jan 1, 1177 to Dec 31, 1178

    Chams invade

    The Cham kingdom invades the Khmer Empire territory, taking much of the eastern side of the Empire.

    Jayavarman VII expands Khmer territory

    The Khmer king Jayavarman VII defeats the Champs in battle.
    The Khmer territory now extends through most of present-day Laos, Thailand and Burma.
  • Period: Nov 24, 1243 to Nov 24, 1298

    Jayavarman VIII

    Buddhist temples are destroyed by Jayavarman VIII, and Hinduism becomes the main religion in the Khmer Empire.

    Buddhism expands

    During the 1300's, Buddhism once again takes prominence in the Khmer Empire.

    Thais attack

    The Thais attack Angkor, forcing the Khmers to flee

    Angkor Thom and Wat are abandoned.

    Angkor Thom and Wat are abandoned.
    After the Khmers barely survive an attack from the Thai army, the Khmers abandon the cities of Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom, moving to their new capitol called Phnom Penh.

    In 1593 ce, the Thais, who were then called the Siamese, attack and defeat the Khmer king.

    During the 1700's, the Vietnamese repetedly attack the Khmers, finally defeating them near the Mekong River Delta. The modern borders of Cambodia are roughly established

    Jayavarman becomes a devaraja(god-king) in 802
  • Jayavarman II unifies

    Jayavarman II unifies
    Jayavarman the second, soon to be crowned as theravaja(god-king), unites all the smaller states and territories to create his unified empire. He makes the capitol Angkor Thom.
