Timeline of Special Education Events + Concurrent World Events

  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    A landmark court case in which the Supreme Court ruled against the idea that separate educational facilities provided an equitable educational experience. This marked a significant advancement in civil rights movements across the country.
  • Warsaw Pact is Signed

    Eastern European countries such as Poland, East Germany, and the Soviet Union developed a security alliance as a response to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
  • The Beatles announce their Disbandment

    The well-known British band, the Beatles, announce their disbandment in order for members to pursue individual opportunities.
  • Mills vs. Board of Education of the District of Columbia

    This Supreme Court case set the precedent that students who were labeled as "exceptional" were not to be restricted from accessing publicly-funded educational opportunities.
  • Congressional Investigation

    An investigation led by Congress which determined that a majority of children with special educational needs were not receiving an adequate education. This set a precedent for future legislation to protect students with disabilities.
  • President Nixon resigns from Office.

    After a bombshell investigative report linked the Nixon administration with covering-up a break-in at the Democratic National Comittee, Nixon became the only president to resign from office.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    President Gerald Ford signed the Education for All Handicapped Children Act which protects the right for students with disabilities to be given equal access to education through publicly-funded money. In addition, this also guarantees at least one free meal for students.
  • Atari 2600 Released

    The Atari 2600, marketed as the first home console, was released. This marked the beginning of home-gaming across the world.
  • Berlin Wall torn down/Ending of Cold War

    The wall separating Eastern Berlin, originally controlled by the Soviet Union, and Western Berlin was torn down. This also signified the end of the Cold War.
  • New changes for the Education for All Handicapped Children

    This transition included that ITPs were to be developed in order to protect student access to an adequate education. Additionally, autism and traumatic brain injury were now included as disabilities.
  • The Education for All Handicapped Children act Becomes the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

    President Clinton signed into law that students with disabilities are allowed the same access to the curriculum given to other students. Additionally, states were also allowed to expand their definition on developmental delay.
  • No Child Left Behind Act signed by George W. Bush

    This legislation aimed to give resource and funding support for schools to give more attention to students who were struggling/not succeeding in order to increase student achievement.
  • Every Student Succeeds Act

    Previously known as the No Child Left Behind Act, this improved version of legislation also aims to give every student access to a high quality education regardless of location or resource access. This wast to be achieved with federal funding.
