Timeline of Exposure to Traditional and New Media by VERA

  • Music Players

    Even before birth, mother exposed the unborn to music (ex. classical) by placing headphones over the belly.
  • Period: to

    Birth to Pre-literacy

    Time after birth before being able to read, write, and coherently communicate. This is before beginning formal education and majority if not all elements of exposure was introduced by family.

    As evident from photos of my first birthday party

    Being read to at a young age by parents
  • Printed/ Physical Educational Charts and Diagrams

    These are the learning aids used and introduced to the students in Pre-school

    Beginning of Basic Literacy and Formal Education

    Ages 4-7: The time when formal education in Pre-school occurred and reading, writing, and interacting in such a setting began.
  • TV

    Parents had children watching educational children's movies and shows of their choice once it seemed understandable enough to the child
  • Books

    When able to read and write on books without aid of an elder
  • Digital Camera

    Father began documenting family trips and occasions this way
  • Video Cameras

    Father began documenting family trips and occasions this way
  • Billboards

    Was curious and old enough to notice Billboards while driving
  • Period: to

    Lower Middle school

    The first half of Grade School, otherwise known as Lower Middle School, consisting of Prep to Grade 4. Here is where influence outside of school and family, basically the addition of peer influence and a heavier influence from sibling and cousins, began.
  • Newspaper

    Being taught what a newspaper is and its uses in general, unsure if it was first introduced at school or at home, but was presented by both
  • Telephone

    Taught how to use a landline phone, primarily for emergency purposes
  • Gaming Device (Gameboy)

    Shared a GameBoy with brother, used as a toy to pass the time. This soon progressed to inheriting the same Gameboy and PSP
  • Desktop Computers/ Internet

    Unsure how it first began, but remembers playing on cites such as Y8.com and Club Penguin with friends at this age
  • Cellphone

    Was allowed/ given first phone by parents. Primarily this was for emergency reasons.
  • Social Media

    One day older brother introduced Facebook to the family and we all made accounts. First own email was created for this reason
  • DSLR Camera

    Began to do Photography myself here
  • Period: to

    Middle School

    The second half of Grade School, Grades 6 - 8 (skipped Gr.5 due to K-12). The following years were less about discovering the different types of media and more about exploring the information found in known media.
  • Radio

    Mother owned a Radio around this time and preferred to listen to music and news here
  • Laptop

    Unsure when exactly in this timeframe, but up until this point entire family would share a sing desktop computer at home. This is when its efficiency and portability was becoming more of a necessity, besides growing in popularity.

    The Beginning of High School, Grade 9 to current year.
