  • Women Strike for Peace

    Between 12,000 and 15,000 women protest against nuclear testing.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    This act was proposed by President John F. Kennedy and was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson. This law made discrimination on the basis of race, gender, religion, or origin illegal. It also banned segregation in public places.

    Anti-War Movement

    Protest marches against the Vietnam war. Draft card burnings were a popular act during these marches.
  • Voting Rights Act

    Following the Civil Rights Act this act was designed to continue to break racial barriers at the state and local levels. This act made it illegal to stop blacks from voting.
  • Beyond Vietnam

    Martin Luther King Jr gives a speech in New York that links the civil rights movement with the anti-war movement.
  • Fair Housing Act

    This was the first federal law that discriminated the sale or rental of housing based on race, gender, religion, or origin.
