This was one of the deadliest natural disasters that occurred in Texas. A category four hurricane struck the island of Galveston that resulted in 140 mph winds and a 15ft tidal surge that flooded the city. It destroyed many buildings and homes and killed an estimated 6,000- 8,000 people. -
A mine explosion killed over 1,000 workers in Courrieres, France. A fire occurred in an underground mine that led to a massive explosion which destroyed several mines surround the area. Many people who worked in those mines suffered horrible burns. The rescue team and family members of those miners tried to help rescue them but sadly one of the rescue teams were killed descending into the mine. It took several weeks to rescue all the bodies. -
World War I occurred because of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife in 1914. This led nations like France, Russia, Great Britain, Italy, Romania, and the United States (The Allied Powers) to fight against the Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire (Central Powers). This war lasted for four years and ended after Germany signed an armistice agreement with the Allies. -
The idea of prohibition was sweeping the nation during the early 1900's. Senator Morris Sheppard was a big believer in Prohibition and pushed for approving the 18th Amendment. Luckily for Mr. Sheppard it was passed. However, prohibition became quote unpopular by people who did not support the cause. This eventually lead to Prohibition ending in 1933. -
The Holocaust was the systematic killing of European Jews by Germany during World War II. This genocide killed over six million Jewish men, woman, children, and many others. It's no surprise that Adolf Hilter and his army, the Nazis, were anti-Semitic. They believed that Jews were subhumans and were not on equal footing as Germans. Germany was able to kill so many Jews due to the extermination camps that were spread across Germany. Many were also created and spread across Europe. -
This was an important case for not only Texas, but the United States! This court case held that the 14th Amendment prohibited the University of Texas from denying applicants entry into the school solely based on their race. The petitioner, Herman Sweatt, was denied entry into this school simply because he was Black. When he had the school look at his application again, they tried to provide a separate but "equal" facility for black law students. This case paved the way for others! -
President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in November 22, 1963 as he rode down Dealy Plaza through downtown Dallas, Texas. The president, his wife, and the governor were one their way to a scheduled luncheon. But out of nowhere, gunfire was heard and bullets struck both the president and the governor. JFK was shot in the head and neck and was seen slumped over his wife, Mrs. Kennedy. Lee Harvey Oswald was held for the assassination of President Kennedy and was later killed by Jack Ruby. -
Martin Luther King Jr. was a minister and civil rights activist who left a powerful impression on the US. He paved the way in ending racial segregation in the US, created the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. During a march in Memphis for a labor strike, King gave a eerily prophetic speech. The next day, King was shot and killed by a sniper outside his hotel room. This sparked riots, and demonstrations across the country. James Earl Ray was charged for the death of MLK Jr. -
Apollo 11 was the space mission that first landed humans on the moon! Commander Neil Armstrong, pilot Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin and Michaels Collins created history when they landed on the moon. This mission was televised and over 600 million people were watching this incredible event take place. This moment led us to hearing Armstrongs famous words "...one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind". Armstrong was the first person to step onto the moon and was then followed by Aldrin. -
George W. Bush was the 43rd president of the United States. He was a two-term Republican governor of Texas before becoming president. He won the presidency against his Democratic opponent, Al Gore, in 2000 and was later sworn into office in January 2001. His presidency was shaped by the 9/11 terrorist attacks against America and authorized US led wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
