They would exaggerate what Weyer was actually doing to promote their paper. The President was upset about the letter and sent troops to Cuba to protect American land and bring American citizens home. The ship blew up on the way back to America killing many men, on one knew what the cause of this was until it was released that the Spanish had blown up the ship. Hearst offered $50,000 to whoever found the Spanish man who did this. This was important because it was kind of the first “act” Spain did to actually harm the U.S.
