In 1607 the Virginia colony of Jamestown was founded by the Virginia Company. -
In 1609 the time period referred to as the Starving Period begins. During this period of time disease, violence, drought, and bad water brought deaths of many Jamestown colonists in the winter. This time period ended in 1610. -
In 1612 John Rolfe established a tobacco plantation on the James river, which was about 30 miles from Jamestown. -
In 1619 slavery begins in the colonies, as twenty Africans are brought by a Dutch ship to Jamestown for sale as indentured servants. -
On July 30, 1619 the first colonial legislative meeting, the Virginia House of Burgesses, convened in Jamestown.

In 1624, The Virginia Company charter was revoked in London and Virginia was declared a Royal colony. -
In 1676, Nathaniel Bacon led a rebellion against Virginia Governor William Berkeley, which resulted in Bacon's burning of Jamestown.
