  • Dred Scott

    In 1846, Dred Scott sued for his freedom, arguing that as a slave, he had lived in several free territories, and that this would be a factor to eliminate his slave status. The courts, however, did not agree, and this led to republicans reacting badly, and believing that the United States were trying to legalize slave owning throughout every state.
