    missouri compromise
    Missouri was admitted to the union as a slave state and Maine as a free state. this way the balance between slave and free states was balanced. congress also banned slavery in a part of louisiana forever.
    This led to the civil war because it pleased no one. Slave holders deeply resented the ban on slavery in part of the louisiana territory. North congressmen who voted to accept missouri were called traitors.
  • The Compromise of 1850

    The Compromise of 1850
    The compromise addmitted California to the union as a free state. Utah and Mexico would be organized as territories open to slavery. The compromise also ended the slave trade in Washington D.C.
    This led to the civil war because people were unhappy and it only fueled the debate.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    created Kansas and Nebraska. Scrapped the Missouri compromise by letting the settlers choose to permit slavery or not. This event led to the civil war because the two governments were fighting for the terriotories. It also led to an anti-slavery government burning down a hotel, looting several homes and tossed two abolitionist paper presses into the Kaw river. The raid provoked an outrage in the North. John Brown who was an abolitionist and seven followers of his raided a pro slavery town.

    The Dred Scott case
    Dred Scott was a slave who traveled with his owner to the free state of Wisconsin. He went to court to win his freedom he said his stay in wisconsin made him a free man. The court ruled that Scott could not sue for his freedom nor could he become a citizen.
    This event led to the civil war because it enraged northerners and people believed it to be a wicked and false judgement.

    Abraham Licoln becomes the 16th president of the united states This led to the civil war because Lincoln was anti slavery and the south were angry he became president.
  • Attack on Fort Sumter

    Attack on Fort Sumter
    Hoteades from Charleston South Carolina opened fire on fort sumter a month after they declared the union is dissolved.
    This event led to the civil war because this was the first battle of the civil war even though nobody was killed
