The magnitude of the Lisbon Earthquake was around 9.0. It killed about 20,000 people. When the water retreated, it apparently revealed many shipwrecks with treasure, and people ran out towards them. They then were hit with the return of the water. -

The Krakatoa volcano exploded and caused the top of the volcano to fall into the ocean. It killed more than 36,000 people. The magnitude of the earthquake is unknown. It was so strong that it tossed blocks of coral that weighed 600 tons onto the shore. -

The earthquake had a magnitude of 9.5 in Chile. It then traveled 15 hours across the Pacific and killed 61 people in Hawaii. In Chile, the death toll was never fully calculated, but about 1,600 people. It is the largest earthquake ever recorded. -

The Alaskan earthquake had a magnitude of 9.2. The tsunami ended up killing 130 people in California and Alaska. The old town of Valdez, Alaska was relocated several miles west after the tsunami struck. -

The earthquake in the sea of Japan had a magnitude of 7.8. The tsunami killed 120 people on Okushiri Island, Japan. It took between two to seven minutes after the earthquake for the first damaging tsunami wave to hit. -

The earthquake in Papua New Guinea had a magnitude of 7.1. It caused a submarine landslide which created a tsunami and killed over 200 people. Many palm and coconut trees were ripped out completely by the tsunami waves. -

The earthquake in Sumatra had a magnitude of 9.1. The tsunami produced by it killed about 230,000 people. The whole rupture of the earthquake lasted about 10 minutes. -
Samoa Earthquake - Samoan Islands
The earthquake in Samoa had a magnitude of 8.1. About 200 people were killed in the tsunami that was produced by the earthquake. There was little earthquake damage, but many people perished in the tsunami when they tried to drive away. -
Chile Earthquake - Chile
The earthquake in Chile had a magnitude of 8.8. About 700 people in the coastal towns were killed in the tsunami. A study found out that the temblor triggered small earthquakes in Antarctica's ice sheets. -
Tohoku Earthquake - Japan
The earthquake in Japan had a magnitude of 9.1. Over 20,000 people died from the tsunami. As of February 2017, residents were still recovering, and 50,000 of them were still living in temporary houses.
