  • Creation of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam

    the leadership of the communist party which was President Ho Chi Minh. The Vietnamese launched an uprising to take and have power and the democratic of Vietnam was created.

    Battle of Diet Bien Phu

    This war was a military victory for the Vietnam and brought an end to French colonial rule. The war caused the separation of country into North Vietnam and South Vietnam.
  • Creation of the 17th parallel between North and South Vietnam

    After the war the agreement separated Vietnam at the 17th parallel. This is a dividing line between North and South Vietnam. It created a communist state in the North and a non communist in the South.
  • Establishment of the National Liberation Front

    This establishment was to overthrow the Southern Vietnamese government and to bring together the North and South. The NLF did not establish a revolutionary government of south Vietnam was announced. With the reunification the Vietnam NLF joined the communist party and formed a united front.
  • Gulf of Tonkin Incident and Resolution

    The North Vietnamese warships attacked the US warships. This was prompted by two attacks on two Navy destroyers. This attack was authorized by President Lyndon Johnson when he stated, "take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the US and to prevent any further aggression."

    Operation Rolling Thunder

    The US Air Force and Navy aircraft engaged in a bombing campaign which was made to force Ho Chi Minh to not take over South Vietnam. To persuade the the North to help and negotiate the president (Johnson) restricted the bombing of the North to the Southern part.
  • US combat troops arrive in Vietnam

    In march 3,500 marines arrived in Da Nang for the first time to protect the US airbase from the Viet Song attacks. The US increased their military forces in the South and after losing the Vietnam war they gained influence over the population.

    Tet Offensive

    This was when 80,000 Viet Cong troops did a surprise attack in the south. They hit major metropolitan centers. Had military victory but moral blow.
  • My Lai Massacre

    My Lai village was attacked by 100 men that were sent to destroy the village. 347-504 men, women and children were murdered. Houses were set on fire and US troops were never fired upon.

    1968 Democratic National Convention

    Tens of thousands of Vietnam war protesters battled police in the streets. The Democratic Party called apart because of a disagreement concerning the stance on Vietnam. Over a couple of hours the American line of thought of the Cold War with soviet was broken.
  • 1968 Presidential Election

    The election was the 46th quadrennial US presidential election. It included the assassination of MLK and caused race riots across the nation and the assationation of Robert F. Kennedy. This had violence spread between the police and the anti war protestors.
  • Kent State University Protest

    This protest was caused by the shootings at Kent state. The members of the Ohio national guard fired at a crowd and killed four and wounded nine Kent state students. This triggered a nationwide student strike and suggested it was based on national politics.
