Japanese troops stationed in Indochina carried out a coup against French soldiers and declared Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia as independent countries.

In 1946, Minh rejected a French proposal that would allow Vietnam to have a limited self-government. This becomes a turning point for the Vietnamese and they begin a guerilla war against the French.

The People's Republic of China and the Soviet Union officially recognize the communist Democratic Republic of Vietnam. Both countries began to supply Vietnam with military and economic aid.

In June of 1950, the United States identifies and classifies the Viet Minh as a Communist threat. Shortly after this declaration, the United States begins to assist the French with their operations against the Vietnamese.
