The Vietnam War

  • The Baby Boomer Generation.

    The Baby Boomer Generation.
    The Baby Boomer Generation began in 1946 and ended in 1964. The Vietnam War began in the middle of this generation. Many of the memebers of this gernation were to young to fight in the war, but could have lost family memebers or could have protested the war.
  • Battle of Dien Bien Phu Begins.

    Battle of Dien Bien Phu Begins.
    A force of 40,000 armed Vietminh men go to the French Garrison. They used Chinese weapons to make it hard for the French to have their supplies come by air. This battle is clear that the French found their match. This is the first battle in the war.
  • United States Train South Vietnamese.

    United States Train South Vietnamese.
    Kennedy agrees to send people over to train troops. The United States Military Assistance Advisor Group was given the responsibility to train the troops.
  • The French leave Vietnam.

    The French leave Vietnam.
    The last French soldiers leave South Vietnam. They left because they realized that they could no longer maitain colonial control over Vietnam, so they decided to leave.
  • John F. Kennedy elected President of the United States.

    John F. Kennedy elected President of the United States.
    John F. Kennedy defeats Richard Nixon for the presidency.
  • Battle of Kien Hoa Province.

    Battle of Kien Hoa Province.
    This was an early engagement in the Vietnam War. It was initiated by the Viet Cong invasion. A group of 400 guerillas attacked a village in Kienhoa Province and were defeated by South Vietnamese troops.
  • Battle of Ap Bac.

    Vietcng units defeat South Vietnamese Army.
  • Lyndon B. Johnson Becomes President.

    Lyndon B. Johnson Becomes President.
    Johnson wore his heart on his sleeve during this war. He was known for waking up in the middle of the night to check the latest casually reports coming from Southeast Asia. He did not want to fight the war to win, but rather to fight the war to not lose.
  • Gulf of Tonkin Incident.

    Gulf of Tonkin Incident.
    Three North Vietnamese boats fired torpedoes at the USS Maddoz that was located in the international waters of the Tonkin Gulf which is thirty miles off the coast of North Vietnam.
  • American Marines Arrive at Danang.

    American Marines Arrive at Danang.
    The first American troops arive in Vietnam to help defend in Danang.
  • B-52s Bomb North Vietnam.

    B-52s Bomb North Vietnam.
    America bombed North Vietnam to try and disrupt the movement of Mugia Pass- the main route used by the NVA to send supplies into South Vietnam. This was the first bombing by America.
  • Battle of Hue.

    Battle of Hue.
    A 26 day battle where the United States and South Vietnamese forces try to recapture the area that was seized by the communists. This battle left half of the population homeless.
  • My Lai Massacre

    My Lai Massacre
    This was a mass murder killing hundreds of people in South Vietnam. Men, women, children and infants were killed.
  • End of the Draft is annouced.

    End of the Draft is annouced.
    The draft for soldiers is no longer happening for the Vietnam War.
  • The Last United States Troops leave Vietnam.

    The Last United States Troops leave Vietnam.
    The U.S troops were withdrawn from Vietnam.
  • Gerald Ford calls Veitnam War "Finished"

    Gerald Ford calls Veitnam War "Finished"
    Allowing Americans to regain the sense of pride that was there before the Vietnam War.
  • Ronald Reagan elected President of the United States.

    Ronald Reagan elected President of the United States.
    He was the 49th United States President. Became Presiden at the end of the war.
