    The First Indochina War
    France is controlled by Germany and looses control of Vietnam. Japan then invades Vietnam. The Vietnamese forces combat and push Japan out of their country. Vietnam they became declared itself an independent country. France refused to recognize Ho's declaration started fighting.

    The Geneva Accords declared a cease-fire between Vietnam and France. They then split Vietnam into 2 parts: The communist North and the democratic-based South. The dividing line was set on the 17th parallel.

    The Diem Regime

    The Diem Regime proved to be very oppresive, unfair, and unpopular. Even so, The U.S. continued to support him. Because of this Ho Chi Minh-backed forces combated Diem, known as the Vietcong. In 1962, President JFK sent "military advisors" to help train South Vietnamese soldiers. The AVRN

    The War Begins
    France had taken over Vietnam in the late 1800's and formed a colony called French Indochina. In the 1900's, people grew restless and demanded freedom through nationalist movements. The main one of these was by the Communist leader Ho Chi Minh, who made a nationalist group called the Vietcong.
  • Elections Canceled

    Elections Canceled
    The U.S. were afraid that Vietnam would fall to communism, therefore they supported an anti-communist politician named Ngo Dinh Deim. With help from the U.S., Deim took control of South Vietnamese gov't in 1955. He then canceled the elections that were scheduled for 1956.

    The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
    Vietnamese forces allegedly attacked U.S. troops, so President Lyndon B. Johnson came up with this to officially announce that America is joining the war.
  • First U.S. troops arrive

    First U.S. troops arrive
    3,500 arines became the first to arrive in South Vietnam.
  • Cease-Fire and U.S. withdrawal

    North Vietnam, South Vietnam, and the U.S. came up to an agreement and made a cease-fire

    Invasion of Saigon
    North Vietnamese troops invaded South Vietnam's capital, Saigon, which soon fell. Then Vietnam was reunited in a communist form of gov't.
