    The French Army surrenders to the Viet Minh at Dien Bien Phu. The battle signals the end of French involvement in Indochina and the beginning of direct US involvment in Vietnam. The US will oppose open elections in the country and favors a divided Vietnam with the US in control of the non-communist South.
