    Catherine of Aragon gave birth to a girl. She was not able to give Henry VIII a male heir.

    Demand for divorce
    With the help of Cardinal Wolsey, the King demanded for divorce to Pope Clement VII. The demand was rejected and Henry replaced Cardinal Wolsey by Sir Thomas More.

    Thomas Cranmer was nominated as Archbishop of Canterbury with the help of Ann Boleyn

    This Act gave the King the legal power to annul marriages. The same year, Thomas Cranmer married Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. They had a daughter: Elizabeth I. The same year, the King was excommunicated by the Pope.

    Henry VIII died in 1547. His son Edward VI became Lord Protector at only nine years old. He was Protestant and tried to make the Church of England more Protestant.

    Mary I
    Mary I became the first Queen regnant ever at 37 years old. Her aim was to restore Catholicism and make an alliance with the Habsburgs empire.

    She married Phillip II in 1554 which created an alliance with Spain. Over 200 Protestants went to stake during her reign. Protestants were forced to leave England, and became the Marian exiles. Mary I became Bloody Mary. She died of illness in 1558.

    The Elizabethan Settlement
    Elizabeth I became Queen in 1558 at 25 years old. She was an unmarried woman that needed to prove wrong gender prejudice because she was the daughter of Ann Boleyn. She was Protestant. She found a compromise to satisfy the greatest number. With progressive acts, she installed a new form of faith and church structure.

    Act of Supremacy

    The Act of Supremacy reaffirmed the authority of the Queen over the Church. Elizabeth I became "Supreme Governor of the Church of England." The new Church of England became Anglicanism, with some Catholic features and Protestant ideas.

    Because of this Act, every parish had to use the Book of Common prayer.

    Because of the Civil War in Scotland, Mary Queen of Scots had to escape England. She was imprisoned for 19 years.

    6000 insurgents wanted to replace Elizabeth I with Mary Queen of Scots who was Catholic, the next heir in line, and daughter of King of Scotland and Mary de Guise.
