    The Triangular Trade begins
    During 1450, the triangular trades begun. People went to other countries to trade food and other items. The main thing that they traded was tobacco plant.

    The Lost Colony of Roanoke was established on Roanoke Island. The colony was found by Sir Walter Raleigh. Today Roanoke Island is now North Carolina.
  • Virginia becomes the first colony

    Virginia was founded by a London Company. It then became the first British colony in North America. Today, Jamestown, Virginia is the first permanent English settlement.

    During 1614 farmers discovered the tobacco plant. January 1, 1614, the first tobacco plant was planted. Tobacco was one of the main plants that people traded during the triangular trade.

    The House of Burgesses was established in 1619. The House of Burgesses was the lower house of the colonial Virginia legislature. Governor Yeardley, Council, and 22 burgesses representing 11 plantations at an assembly.

    New Hampshire was created to be a fish colony created by Captain John Mason. It has been named for Hampshire County in England. New Hampshire was also founded by John Wheelwright, and other colonists in 1622.

    Roger Williams was kicked out of Massachusetts for his belief in the separation of church and state. He then went to live with the Narragansett Indians. He then formed Providence, which became the capital of Rhode Island.

    William Penn was the son of Sir William Penn. William Penn was going to establish what was now Pennsylvanian. He was going to name it Sylvania which means the woods but he changed the name to Pennsylvanian. William was an early Quaker which means he did not believe in slavery.

    July 4, 1776 was when the Declaration of Independence was signed. The 13 American colonies ended their political connections to Great Britain. The 13 colonies were adopted by the Continental Congress that day.

    The Second Continental Congress decided on the first American flag, it would have 13 stripes. The wanted the stripes to be red and white so that they could represent the 13 colonies. Over the years there has been many different variations of the flag but the 13 stripes has always remained the same.
