  • Roanoke Island

    Roanoke Island
    Queen Elizabeth allowed Walter Raleigh to send over 100 men to Roanoke Island. When they arrived, they killed some of the Native Americans in that area and even killed the cheif! Since they didn't have enough supplies, they had to go back to England.
  • The Lost Colony

    The Lost Colony
    Since the colony needed more supplies, John White went back to England to get more. There was a Spanish invasion and it took England 2 years to defeat them.White returned to Roanoke and discovered that no one was there! The word "Croatoan" was carved nearby. A hurricane hit the island and White was forced to go back to England. People called it "The Lost Colony."
  • Jamestown

    20 years later, a group of over 100 men landed on the banks of the James River in Virginia. They were attacked by some Native Americans, but were determined to stay. They built a fort to protect themselves. They were running out of food and were dying of diseases. Only 60 men survived and they continued to live on to establish Jamestown.
  • House of Burgesses and Servants

    House of Burgesses and Servants
    1619 was an important year because the House of Burgesses was established. Black workers also called indentured servants, came by boat to work a plot of land and later own it. Other indentured servants worked for their voyage to the New World.
  • Mayflower Lands

    The Pilgrims land in Plymouth, Massachusetts. They had traveled aboard the Mayflower. After living off of salted beef, dried biscuits, and other dried vegetables on the Mayflower, they had finally arrived the New World.

    The colonists had become friends with the Native Americans. A Native American named Squanto helped them grow food in the cold weather. By giving thanks, the Pilgrims invited the Native Americans to a 3 day feast we now know as Thanksgiving.

    Rhode Island was a New England colony. It was founded by Roger Williams. The reason the colony was established was because of religious freedom.

    Willam Penn and the Quakers weren't accepted in the New England colonies, so King Charles II gave Penn some land that was southwest of New Jersey. He was thinking about naming the land Sylvania meaning "woods", but later named it Pennsylvania.

    New Hampshire was a New England colony. It was founded by John Mason. The reason the colony was established was because of farming.

    Georgia was founded by James Oglethorpe. The colony was named for King George II.
