    Within this timepan, the election of 1824 and 1828 occurred. The modern Democratic Party was formed. In this era, true democratic feelings began to spread!
  • Adam/Onis Treaty of 1819

    Adam/Onis Treaty of 1819
    Jackson went into Florida with many troops and as Spain was already fighting in Latin America, they did not want to go to war. They designed a preace treaty with the US called the Adam/Onis Treaty in 1819. Secreatary of State John Q. Adams managed the treaty with Spain. In this treaty, Florida was given to US by Spain for 5 million dollars. This treaty was in session from 1821, this spread democracy. By admitting a new state, the amount of voters increased which increased representation!

    With the Louisiana Purchase , Missouri was admitted as a state. This led to controversy in Congress whether it was to be considered as a slave or non-state.As a compromise, Missouri was admitted as a slave state and Maine as a non-slave state at the same time. Now there was a balance between free and slave states. this spreads democracy since everyone was represented equally.

    In 1823 President James Monroe made a bold statement or declaration to Congress that was presented as The Monroe Doctrine. US would not involve in affairs of European nations or existing colonies in the European nations. European nations cannot regain control of land in the independent nations in latin america. US would oppose any attempt of building colonies in America. this spreads democracy as now US became stronger. US kept Europe out of the west

    “Claims of “Corrupt Bargain”
    In Clay’s persuasion, he forged an Ohio Valley-New England coalition which secured the white house to John Q. Adams. In addition, Henry and John created this “secretive” alliance which gave Henry the position of Secretary of State while John Q. Adams was president. There actions proved to be more disadvantageous than beneficial since their alliance was deemed a “corrupt bargain”. This rallied up America to believe in Democracy and to get rid of this nefarious system of government.

    Ever since the corruption of the Henry-Clay alliance was announced, Andrew Jackson was able to burgeon the spirit of a true democratic system. He was the first common westerner to become President. He represented the large population of common people and believe that the concerns of the common men were ignored due to greedy elites. With Jackson's new founded party, it spread the idea of true Democrarcy. He believed in representing the populous which mainly consisted of "common men".

    In the election of 1824, there were four candidates-John Q. Adams, Henry Clay, Andrew Jackson, and William Crawford. Although Andrew Jackson had technically won the electoral college with 99 votes and john Q. Adams with 84 votes, he did not recieve at least 50% of the country’s electoral vote. This left the HOR to decide who would become president. Henry Clay, whom at the time was the Speaker of the House, persuaded the reps to vote for John Q. Adams.     John Quincy Adams believed in the federal government promoting economics. There were many people that agreed with John and his supporters called themselves “National Republicans”,but they later began calling themselves the "whigs". The whigs consisted of eastern business planters, southern planters, and former federalists. This party was a part of our democratic system from 1825-1829, and the party would later begin to form our future Republican Party.

    John Quincy Adams was the 6th president. He was not a very well liked president and his beliefs were very similar to Alexander Hamilton. He believed that the federal government should promote economic growth.Most Americans opposed John Q. Adams thoughts as they thought that this would lead to the federal government becoming too powerful. Because of his beliefs and visions, a formation of another political party began. During his election, through the Adams Onis treaty a new state was admitted!

    When John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson both ran for presidency. Jackson won the election with 178 electoral votes. It was a very easy race between the two. Jackson had more representation on his side. Before Jackson, we did not have a true democratic system, Jackson was the first westerner to become president. When Jackson became president, a pure democratic system was brought in place. His beliefs changed the way our system worked before, when the northerners had more advantage.
