    The northern and southern states have heated debates over the growth of slavery. Henry clay settles the Debbie with a compromise. The Missouri comprimise was a series of laws that helped settled slave states and free states.

    The nullification crisis
    Southern states like South Carolina felt that the tariffs were unfair and only supported the north. Vice President John c. Calhoun said any state could nullify (make void) a federal law it considers unconstitutional. When the federal govt. denied south Caroline's argument the they had the right to reject a federal law, South Carolina threatened to secede. Henry clay came up with a compromise and lowered the tariff.

    Congress had many heated debates as to weather the new territories won from Mexico would be admitted as slave states or free states.henry clay once again made a compromise. California was admitted as a free state. The govt would not pass laws banning slavery in the rest of the territories.

    The fugative slate act was passed by congress in 1850. The act was permitted the capture of African Americans who had fled to the north to escape bondage. These laws heightened tension, and set the stage for John Browns raid and American civil war.

    5000 people from a nearby proslavery, Missouri came and voted for proslavery representative in Kansas illegally. Anti slavery opponents started their own govt.the antis livery govt was attacked by proslavery forces. To avenge this attack, extreme abolitionist John brown murdered several of his proslavery neighbors.

    Dred scott decision
    Dred scott was a slave who sued for his freedom. He argued that because he lived in a free territory that he should have been emancipated. The court ruled dred Scott not free based on his residence in either Illinois or Wisconsin. Because African Americans were not considered citizens when the constitution as created in 1787. And because he was property of his owner and property cannot be taken without due precession of law.

    John brown anted to inspire slves to fight for their freedom,he planed to captur the arsenal. Brown and his men were captured. Qbolistionists saluted John brown as he was put to death, the issue of slavery had raised tension in America to the breaking point.

    Abraham Lincoln wins the election. The southern states begin to secede once Abraham lincoln is elected.
