    The Missouri Compromise was a compromise regarding slavery in unorginized territories. It stated that besides Missouri, slavery was not allowed above the 36' 30' line.

    After the Mexican American War, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was created. This gave the United States a large amount of land that was below the 36' 30' line. This meant more space for slaves.
  • Wilmont's Proviso

    Wilmont's Proviso

    A Northen Congressman offered Wilmont's Proviso. It planned to prohibt slavery from all aquirred Mexian land from the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. It was never passed, but it angered the south.

    The Fugitive Slave Act allowed slave owners to hunt down their slaves that had ran away to the North and bring them back to the South. Northereners that don't turn in a run away slave could face jail time.

    Debates held between Lincoln and Douglas forced the issue in polotics.
  • John Brown's Slave Revolt

    Brown lead an attempt to arm slaves and aid in a revolt. He was captured and hung in the process. Southerners now feared that the North were secretly arming slaves.

    Lincoln, an anti-slavery Republican was elected. This brought Southerners to a conclusion that the only option left was to secede from the Union.

    The Crittenden Compromise sought to restore things back to the days of the Missouri Compromise. This was rejected and now the Civil War was in sight.
