    The northerners southern states have a heated debate over the growth of slavery. Henry Clay, known as the great compromiser settle the debate. The Missouri compromise were a series of laws that helped maintain the balance between slave and free states.

    The Nullification Crisis
    The tariff laws were passed and unsettled the south because they thought it only supported the north. John C. Calhoun said any state could nullify a law. The federal law had denied South Carolina to nullify so they threatened to secede. Henry Clay came up with the compromise to lower tariffs.

    Congress had many heated debates. The New Mexican land would be either slave or free states. Henry clay made the compromise between north and the south. California is admitted as a Slave state, congress would not pass laws banning slavery from the rest of the territories.

    This law was passed by congress in 1850. The act allowed the capturing of African Americans who fled to the north to escape bondage. This act convinced abolitionists to end slavery. These laws higher education tension and set the stage for John Brown's attack and the Civil War.

    5000 people from proslavery Missouri voted illegally for proslavery Kansas. Antislavery rivals started their own government. They were attacked by proslavery forces. To avenge this attack John Brown murdered several proslavery neighbors.

    Dress Scott was a slave who was sued for his freedom. The court declared the following: Scott was not free based on his residence in either Illinois or Wisconsin. Africanamericans were not considered citizens when the constitution was drafted. Dread scott was the property of his owner.
  • Attack on Harpers Ferry

    Attack on Harpers Ferry
    John Brown was planning to capture the arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, to arm the slaves and to inspire them to fight for their freedom. He sent word to gather slaves to join the fight, but no one joined. Brown and his men were captured and ten were killed. Abolitionists saluted brown as he was put to death. The issue of slavery had raised tensions in America to the breaking point.

    Abraham Lincoln wins the electio, even though he said he wouldn't abolish slavery in the south, the south did not trust him. the Southern states started to secede from the Union.
