  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    The north and south politicians started having heated debates about the growth of slaves. Henry Clay, known as the Great Compromiser, helped to settle the debate, the Missouri Compromise. This helped maintain the balance between slave and free states.
  • The Nullification Crisis

    The Nullification Crisis
    Southern states felt that the tariffs were unfair and only supported the north. Vice President John C. Calhoun said that any state could nullify, if they felt like the law was unconstitutional from the federal government. The federal government denied this to South Carolina and they soon threatened to seced from the U.S. Henry Clay came up with a compromise to solve this.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    After the war with Mexico, congress became heated up with the new territory gained. The didn't know which would be free and with would have slaves. Henry Clay helped with the compromise with stating: California would be a free state and congress would not pass laws banning slaver form the rest of the territory.

    With the slave act passed by congress, it permitted the capture of African-Americans. The African-American being captured were those in the free states that escaped. These laws heightened the tension between the north and south.

    With the 5000 people, from the proslavery state of Missouri, they voted for the slavery of Kansas. Anti-slavery opponents begun to start their own government. This new government was soon attacked by the slavery people, and with that, John Brown lead an attack on these people a murdered server all people in it.

    Because Scott was a slaved sued for freedom, he argued for his freedom in free territory. The court ruled that he was not free based on residence in Illinois or Wisconsin, African Americans were not considered citizens by the Constitution, and that he was the property of his owner and could be taken without due process of law.
