In 802 CE Jayavarman II establishes and founds the Angkor/ Khmer Empire in Cambodia. He used wars, alliences and marriges to expand thearea under his control. He built several Hindu temples. These temples built expanded the empire.

Rajendravarman II builds a series of temples at Angkor, and during his reign the khmers had their first war with Champa.

The khmer court became a centre of shcolars (writers) and art. This motivated and promoted education.

Suryavarman II extended the Khmer Empire by conquering Haripunchai and south western Thailand up to the border with Bagan. In the east and north he took several provinces of Champa and expanded north to present southern border of laos and his control spreaded to Laos, Vietnam , Myanmar and Thailand. Suryvarman II starts to build the renound Angkor Watt Temple which is the biggest religious monument in the world.

after the death of Suryavarmans the Cham invaded the Khmer Empire in 1117 CE. There is instability on the throne. They sacked the Khmer capital and killed King Tribhuvanadityavarman.

Jayavarman VII waged war against Champa for twenty two years and conqured much of its land. Jayavarman VII was a follower of Mahayana Buddhism and he made this a new state religion. The khmers also built Angkor Thom (meaning Great City) including its Bayon Temple (along with many other semi famous temples), roads, hospitals and rest houses for travelers and traders; great infrustructure.

After Jayavarman VII's death no more temples were built. The Khmer Empire lost much territory they had conqured in Champa. There was also religious conflict.

Jayavarman VIII wanted to return to Hinduism. He converted Buddhist temples to Hindu temples to Hindu temples and destroyed many Hindu temples and thousands of Buddha images. During Jayavarman VIII's reign the Khmer Empire was threatened by a powerful Empire to its north. Jayavarman VIII paid tribute to Mongols to avoid war and for a time this made the Khmer Empire a Vassal (a holder of land by feudal tenure) state of the Mongols. The Mongols also defeated and captured bagan.

Srindravarman introduced Theravada Buddhism to the Khmer Emprie this was adopted quickly.

Indrayayavarman regarded in 1327 that is was the end of the Khmer classical period and no miore temples were built after this statement. The Khmer capital is moved to Phom Penh.
