    The Khmer Empire begins

    A prince of Khmer returened to Cambodia (then known as Kambuja or Kambujadesa) procliamed Cambodia's indepemdence and soon claimed himself God-king Jayavarman II. Jayavarman II established four capitals for his kingdom, the most imortant being Hariharalaya. Jayavarman II used alliances, wars and marriges to expand his kingdom. He also built several temples and the temples built by his successors were served as mausoleums for the Khmer kinds when they died.

    Yasovarman I contructs a new capital called Yasodharapura as well as a giant resevoir in the Angkor area

    Rajendravarman II builds a series of temples

    Rajendravarman II builds a series of temples at Angkor and during his reign the Khmers had their first war with Champa

    Cham invaded the Khmer Empire

    they rowed up the Mekong river and across Tonle Sap in war canoes, taking the Khmer capital and killed King Tribhuvanadityavarman.

    First Thai kingdom established

    A few Thai nobles from the west rebelled and decided to establish the first Thai kingdom at Sukhothai

    Jayavarman VIII wanted to return to Hinduism so he converted and the Buddhist temples into Hindu temples and destroyed the image of Buddha almost all together.

    Jayavarman VIII paid tribute to the Mongols to avoid war, which was cinsidered a very wise decision when four years later the Mongols defeated and caotured Bagan

    Jayavarman VIII was overthrown by his son-in-law Srindravarman who introduced Thervada Buddhism to the Khmer Empire
