Jayavarman ll established four capitals for his kingdom

He used wars,alliances and marriage to expand the area under his control
Built several HIndu temples and his successors went on building more, expanding the empire

Yasovarman l constructed a new capital called Yasodharapura and a new resevoir in the Angkor area.
Yasovarman l moves the Khmer capital to Angkor area

Rajendravarman

Rajendravarman reign. He built a series of temples at Angkor.
During his reign Khmer Empire had their first war with Champa.

Jayavarman V

During Jayavarman V reign, the Khmer court became a centre for scholars and artists.

Suryavarman ll

-Suryavarman ll kills rival prince in battle fought on war elephants -- - gains power.
- Construction of the Angkor Wat commenced dedicaded to the Hindu God Vishnu
- Extended Khmer Empire by conquering Haripunchai and south-western Thailand up to border with Bagan
-after Jayavarman V's death years of fierce power struggles among the Khmer ruling class which kings were overthrown by their rivals
-took several provinces of Champa. expanded north present southern border of Laos

He was regarded as the greatest king.
He built the Angkor Thorn

After Jayavarman Vll's death, the Khmer Empire slowly begins to decline

-After death, no other temples were built
-Khmer lost much of territory they'd conquered in Champa
-Several Thai nobles rebelled, establishing the first Thai kingdom at Sukhothai in 1238
