Came to power after killing a rival prince in a battle fought on war elephants. He extantded the Khmer empire by conquering Haripunchai and south-western Thailand. In the east and North he took several provinces of Champa and expanded North to the present southern border of Laos. Suryavarman ll builds up Angkor Wat.

Under King Tribhuvanadityavarmans rule the Cham invaded the Khmer Empire rowing to the shores in war canoes. They sacked the Khmer capital and killed King Tribhuvanadityavarman.

Khmer Empire reaches its greatest extent under Jayavarman ll. He waged war against Champa for twenty-two years and conquered much of its land. Jayavarman made Mahayana Buddism the state religion. The khmers built Angkor Thom including its Bayon Temple, other temples, roads, hospitals, rest-houses for travellers and traders.

No other temples were built. The Khmer Empire had lost much territory they had conquered in Champa to their East. Several nobles rebelled establishing the first Thai Kingdom.

Jayavarman Vlll wanted to return to Hinduism. He converted Buddhist temples to Hindu temples and destroyed thousands of temples. Jayavarman Vlll paided tribute to Mongols to avoid war.

The Angkor rulers abandoned the Khmer Empire, several theories explain why, theory 1, environmental damage caused by the cutting down of tress, theory 2, climate change caused a shortage of water. Theory 3, the change of religion to Theravada Buddism might have weakened the empire.
