The French went under d’Estaing and blocked the small naval force at Narragansett Bay. When a big British army arrived they challenged the French. But a hurricane (August 13–14) destroyed their ships and the army's scattered. The British attacked on August 29. The Americans relized they couldn't cross the British line with out the French navy and had to withdraw.

Fighting against British General Lord Charles Cornwallis and an army of 9,000 British troops at Yorktown, Virginia. This was most important battle of the Revolutionary War. After three weeks of non-stop fighting Cornwallis surrendered to Washington in the field at Yorktown on October 17, 1781, which ended the war for independence.
