    Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri Compromise was made because Missouri applied for statehood and there was a debate to see if it would become a slave stae or a free state. The Missouri Compromise was made to settle this despute between the northern and southern states. Southerners were so outraged they threatened secession. Congress intended to stop the seccesion with the compromise, but it only delayed it and the Civil War.

    In this timeline, you will see how a series of compromises failed to keep the United states from splitting into two over the issue of slavery. Conflicts first arised when territories applied for statehood and was delayed over the issue of slavery. Then problems appeared when a slave sue his master for his rights to be free. Also problems have appeared when southerners or notherners didnt like our president an decided to seceed from the union.

    Compromise of 1850
    The Compromise of 1850 was made by Henry Clay. This compromise was made to end the deadlock in California over its statehood. California applied as a free state. Southerners disliked this and Northerners encouraged it so a big issue began to arise. Clay's compromise was to admit California as a free state but also Utah and New Mexico territories would be organized as territories opened to slavery, which would please the south.

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    Senator Stephen A. Douglas wanted a railroad buit to California. He thought for this to happen, it be nessasary for Congress to organize the Great PPlains into the Nebraska territory and open the region to settler. The territory is located in the north so his bill said nothing about slavery. But, southernsers in Congress all agreed this would only happen if Douglas made changes so he also added Kansas and Nebraska. This worried the northerners.

    A slave, named Dred Scott, went to a free state with his master. Dred then thought it was appropriate and tried to sue his master for his freedom because he went to free state.The court ruled that Dred was still a slave. Northerners were furious. Southerner were okay with this decision and felt more decisions like this would also be in their favor.

    Attack on Fort Sumter
    On April 12, 1861hot-headed southerners opened fire on Fort Sumter. This conflict lasted 33 hours. It ended after the defenders replaced the american flag with the white flag of surrender. It was a bloodless conflict that started a very bloody war that will divide the natio for several years to come.
