n April 1492, King Ferdinand V and Queen Isabella I of Spain agreed to sponsor the expedition. On the first voyage, Columbus commanded three ships: the Santa Maria, the Pinta, and the Niña. After they depart they found Guanahaní, an island in the Bahamas, Columbus renamed the island San Salvador and claimed it for Spain. The expedition also landed on Cuba and Española.He left 40 men before returning to Spain to a happy welcome in 1493.
