The Journey of the Civil Rights Movement

  • 1st Civil Rights Act passed by Congress

    One of the earliest acts in America's Civil War. This Act states all people born in the United States are citizens and no one can be denied the right to vote no matter their race,color, or previous "condition of slavery".
  • The 14th amendment

    This amendment granted equal civil and legal rights to people born in the United States including formerly enslaved people.
  • The 15th amendment

    This amendment helped to grant and protect the voting rights of African American men.
  • The 1st Women suffrage amendment introduced

    When this amendment was introduced it tried to explain that the rights of citizens to vote shouldn’t be restricted or denied based on sex.
  • Plessy vs Ferguson

    This case started with an African American man sitting in a "whites only" train cart. The case ruled the idea of “separate but equal”. This became a pathway for Jim Crow Laws and an increase of segregation.
  • The NAACP was founded

    The NAACP primary goal was to help remove racial discrimination. They worked to have equality in politics and education for every minority.
  • The 19th amendment

    The 19th amendment gave every American women a right vote.
  • Shelly vs Kraemer

    Shelley bought a home in a neighborhood that had signed against black people moving into the neighborhood. This case helped end racial discrimination is housing. They ruled this restriction to selling houses to non-white people violating the 14th amendment.
  • Brown vs Board Education

    After Oliver Brown's daughter, Linda Brown, wasn't allowed to attend Topeka, Kansas all-white school, he filed a law suit. This case helped eliminate racial segregation in schools and ruled that the segregation is unconstitutional.
  • Rosa Parks

    In 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white person. This cause much controversy and even caused her to go to jail. This encourage many movements, such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    This act was of big importance to the civil rights movement. This act helped rule discrimination based on race, color, sex, religion, or national origin unconstitutional.
  • National Organization of Women(NOW)

    The National Organization of Women pushed to help women have more rights and become more equal in America.
  • Green vs County school board

    This case took performative action in desegregating schools. The “freedom of choice” plan still caused some schools to be segregated, this integrated schools.
  • Swan vs Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education

    This case was similar to Brown vs Board of Education. The school denied Swann's son to attend and Swann took this problem to the school board. This ruling helped speed up integration through things like bus programs in public schools.
  • Proposition 209-California

    This helped amend state laws to not be biased on the account of race,color, sex, religion, or ethnicity in public employment, contracting, or education.
