First social media site-SixDegrees
The first social media site was created in 1997 by Andrew Weinreich called Six Degrees which was named after the the " six degrees of separation concept. it allowed people to create a profile and than friend other users of the site. It lasted until 2001.

first blogging sites are born
The first blogging sites began to emerge. one major site was created in 1999 by Brad Fitzpatrick and was called Livejournal. it was used for creating blog posts and users could follow each other and create groups that could interact with eachother.

LinkedIn was founded in 2002 and launched in 2003. it it mainly used for professional networking and allows users to create a professional profile and connect with major employers and also used for job seeking.

Myspace is born

Facebook
Facebook is launched by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004. It becomes the number one social media website today and has billions of users. It is a place that allows users to request others as friends, post updates, and share photos or videos to their timeline.

YouTube is launched
YouTube is launched in 2005 and was founded by Jawed Karim, Steve Chen and Chad Hurley. it allowed users to upload and share videos. Google bought the site in 2006.

Twitter and its tweets
Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams founded twitter in 2006. It allowed users to make post or "tweets" in 140 characters or less. is has over 500 million users today.

Tumblr was founded by David Karp in 2007. It is what they call a microblogging site that allows users to turn different multimedia content into a blog. It allows users to also follow other users blogs.

Pinterest was launched in 2010 and it allows users to “pin” pictures to their boards for other users to look at or like. The site was founded by Ben Silbermann, Paul Sciarra and Evan Sharp.
