    Hernando de Soto explores Georgia

    Hernando de Soto set offf with about 600 men and 220 horses. His metal weapons, plated armour, war dogs and horses devastated the Native Americans. Hernando also brought diseases such as small pox that devasted the Native Americans for which they had no herbal medicines or natural immunities.

    Spanish missions started along Barrier Islands

    Spain first organized missionss on Cumberland Island and St. Catherine's Island, called Santa Cantalina. The missionaries called the region Guale after the Guale Indians. The purporse of the missions was to spread Catholicism. These Catholic missions was a mean by which the Native's could integrate themselves into the Spanish colonial system.
  • The Colony of Virginia was established

    The Virginia colony was established in 1607 by John Smith at Jamestown. Its industry purpose was for trade, and platation agriculture such as tobacco, wheat and corn. The major cities were Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Richmond. Virgnia became a state in June 25, 1788.

    MO wanted to become a state in 1820
    - that would upset balance between free and slave states
    To add more states peacefully:
    1. MO would be added as a slave state
    2. Maine would be added as a free state
    3. Any new territory North of 36'30'' (Missouri Compromise line) would be a free state. Any state South would be a free state.

    -some people felt that they had the power to cancel (nullify) a federal law
    -South Carolina nullified federal tariffs that were hurting the cotton industry
    -South Carolina was thinking about leaving the Union (seceding)
    -President Jackson + SC were prepared to have a military fight
    -SC agreed to a lower tariff and the crisis ended
  • Gold discovered in California

    -CA needed statehood because it was overloaded with people from the gold rush
    -since CA didn't need slaves it wanted to join as a free state

    It had 4 parts:
    I. CA entered as a free state
    II. Fugitive Slave Law- all runaway slaves had to caught and returned to the south
    III no slaves trade allowed in Washington D.C
    IV. any new territory would decide slaves by popular sovereignty ( people choose)

  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott was a slave who lived in free territory with his master. After his master died he tried to sue for his freedom sayin that since he'd lived in a free state, he should be free. The Supreme Court ruled against Dred Scott. They said he was not a citizen and property could not sue for its freedom.

    -Abraham Lincoln runs for President with the Republican Party
    -he said slavery should be restricted
    -South threatened to secede from the Union ud Lincoln was elected
    -Lincoln was elected
    -first SC secedes, then the rest of the South follows
    -They form the Confederate States of America
    -Alexander Stephens (from GA) becomes VIce President
    -Jeffeferson Davis (from Mississippi) becomes President
