James Naismith was the Canadian physical education instructor who invented basketball in 1891.He was the physical education teacher at McGill University (1887 to 1890) and at Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts (1890 to 1895). -

Smith College in Massachusetts becomes the first women's school to play basket ball. Men are not allowed to watch the games. -
Basketball to Olympics
Basketball at the 1936 Summer Olympics was the first appearance of the sport as an official medal event. The tournament was played between August 7th and August 14th 1936 in Berlin, Germany. 23 nations entered the competition, making basketball the largest tournament of the team sports. -

The first televised basketball games were played between Pittsburgh and Fordham (57-37) and New York University and Georgetown (50-27) at Madison Square Garden. -
