    A man named Homer Plessy (that was 1/8th black and could easily pass as a white citizen) was told to move from a white train car to a Jim Crow train car. He refused. Plessy argued that the Seperate Car Act violated the 13th and 14th ammendment . It was in this occasion that it was said that segregation is ok as long as it is Seperate But Equal
  • Brown VS. Board of Education

    Brown VS. Board of Education
    The Topeka Kansas school board denied acces to black student to their white school. Oliver Brown argued that the school boards racial segregation was unconstitutional since the cities black schools were inferior to the white schools and could never be of the same class. A decision was made saying that segregated schools violated the 14th ammendment and thanks to this decision ot guarantees equal education
  • Murder of Emmet Till

    Murder of Emmet Till
    Emmet Till leaves to Mississippi to spend time with his great uncle in August. He made friends that summer and decide to go to a grocery store , and it is said that people heard Emmet whistle at Carolyn Bryant (an owner of the store). Days later the owners of the store and a family member are arrested for kidnapping the boy and brutally torturing and killing him before throwing his body into the Tallahatchie River.

    Rosa Parks and The Montgomerry Boycott
    Rosa Parks was on her way home from working at a department store in Montgomerry. The bus she was riding home began to get full so the bus driver told everyone in Rosa's line to move, they all did except Rosa. She was then again asked to move and she said no, it was then that the bus driver called the police and had her arrested and was fined TEN dollars.

    Founding of The SCLC and MLK
    The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) was created when 60 black mininsters and civil rights leaders were dedicated to achieve strategies such as the on used in the Alabama bus boycott. It was here where MLK was chosen as president of this group, dedicated to end legal segregation. This group helped spread non violent protests and made a huge impact in the Civil Rights.
  • Little Rock 9 & Central HIgh School

    Little Rock 9 & Central HIgh School
    Governor Orval Faubus called on the Arkansas National Guard to block entry to Little Rock High School. President Einsenhower ordered the governonr to dismiss the blockade he put on and to instead order the National Guard to defend the nine students. However the governer completely dismissed the troops leaving the students defenseless and eventually beaten up by the angry white mob of students. This helped take a step towards ending segregated schools.
  • Greensboro Sit-In

    Greensboro Sit-In
    Although the movement began on February 1st, it kept on going days after. It began with only 4 students sitting in an "white only " lunch counter for 30 minutes as they were refused service and began to look for more recruits. By Februrary 4th more than 300 students were participating in this non violent movement, however many were physically hurt and beaten and arrested, after all this fighting and horrible experience, there was not much change after this movement, but many more sit ins happene
  • Freedom Riders

    Freedom Riders
    Non-violent protesters begin a bus ride through the south hoping to desegregate busses. Entering the South they meet strong resistance and arrested and attacked, a bus was set on fire while another one met a fearsome encounter with the KKK. In the end they were "arrested for their own protection" but it made the governmen be more involved in the civil rights movement.

    More than 250,000 people marched on Washington D.C. i order to achieve racial and equal freedom and jobs. This is when Marting Luther King Jr gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. This famous movement helped greatly in the hope of reaching racial justice and equality

    On July 2nd 1964 president Lyndin Johnson made it illegal to discriminate in public places. Such as in school, pubic facilities and made employment segregation illegal. This Act was one of the greates achievements reached during the civil rights movement making it official on paper that descrimation to a persons skin color was wrong.

    In the Summer of !964 a nonviolent to end the segregated political system took place. The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, planned to help African Americans the right to vote. This movement helped greatly in reaching political equality but with the cost of extremely violent actions such as murders, bombings, kidnappings, and torture.

    Assassination of Malcolm X
    The public figure of violent protests Malcom X was assassinated in Feb. 21st. The assassins were said to also be black Muslims like Malcom X. His death occures out of no where and left many surprised, this action was very unfortunate as a civil rights leader was taken down, when he was trying to bring equality to many minorities.

    President Lyndon Johnson outlawed discriminatory voting practices. These practices mostly occured in the south and were mostly unfair literacy test. This finally gave African Americans the right to vote without any obstacles, something this community has been wishing for over 95 years.

    The assassination of MLK Jr was quite infamous. MLK brought many together with his amazing speeches, speeding up the civil rights movement and brought equality to many places. However his death was very tragic and angered many people and helped end the civil rights era with great success.
